Stephen Sandys was educated in West Yorkshire, and after completing a degree and PhD in Biology studied medicine as a graduate at Warwick Medical School qualifying in 2008.
He undertook specialist clinical training in anaesthesia in Warwickshire being elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2014. Further sub-specialty training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care was undertaken at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire.
He moved to Southampton in 2017 as a senior clinical fellow in cardiothoracic intensive care and anaesthesia before taking up his first consultant post at University Hospital Southampton in 2019.
His expertise includes anaesthesia for cardiac, major aortic and cardiology procedures, cardiac intensive care and echocardiography having accreditation in trans-oesophageal echo with the British Society of Echocardiography.
His private practice includes a wide range of general anaesthesia, conscious sedation and regional anaesthesia for upper limb orthopaedics.
He is involved in training the next generation of cardiac anaesthetists at Southampton and has an interest in simulation-based training having established the One Heart course at Southampton.
