Francois Wessels was educated in Switzerland and South Africa and completed his medical training at Leicester Medical School in 2008. He went on to train in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.
He qualified as a Consultant in 2020 initially working in General Intensive Care before sub-specialising in Adult and Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia.
His expertise lies in the peri-operative care of patients undergoing surgery for acquired and congenital heart disease and he provides anaesthesia and sedation for a wide range of procedures, including general, urology, orthopaedic, cardiology, endocrine and emergency surgery. He has a wealth of experience in aeromedical retrieval from his time spent with the Royal Flying Doctors service in Australia.
He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
He is accredited in transoesophageal echocardiography with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.
He works as the Cardiac Faculty Tutor on the Specialty Training Committee for Intensive Care Medicine in Wessex, supervises residents
and teaches on numerous courses for exams, echocardiography, simulation, induction and life support.
He is clinical lead for the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital Southampton.
